Devon and Exeter Institution
The Devon and Exeter Institution (DEI) is an independent library and educational charity in the heart of Exeter. The library and educational facilities are housed within a Grade II* listed building, parts of which date from the 12th century. It holds an outstanding heritage book collection in its original 1813 setting. The foundation collection reveals the intellectual, political and cultural interests of our region from the beginning of the 19th century and includes books, bound newspapers and periodicals, and many thousands of maps, prints, drawings, paintings, pamphlets and other ephemera.
The DEI offers a vibrant public engagement programme that is open to all, complementing its status as a membership organisation with over 700 members. The programme has something for every age and stage, and includes educational activities, cultural events and lectures, inspired by our collections and building.
The Next Chapter
In December 2021, the DEI received a £814,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for the second stage of the project, following a development grant of £186,000 awarded in March 2020; a total grant of one million pounds.
The Next Chapter project taking place over the next three years will:
create an enhanced welcome area, better access and upgraded facilities
open-up Institution’s front rooms and garden spaces for reading and events
offer an enhanced programme of activities for all ages and abilities, including events for UNESCO City of Literature
support essential conservation work, a collection review and the development of a long-term research strategy
