(This is a rescheduled World Book Day event from 3rd March.)
The workshop will include thoroughly examining a poem chosen by Daniel. We will look at how it is structured and why it is structured the way it is. Noting the metrical nuances, the use of rhythm and examining, interpretatively, the language used and the potential meanings the poet is attempting to communicate. The idea is to introduce you to close reading.
These insights into the poem will then be utilised to write your own unique versions of the poem in order to practice writing poetry. Daniel is a firm believer in learning to write through mimicry. Only by studying poems can we understand what poems do. Therefore, mimicking great poems is a brilliant method for learning to write. By the end of the workshop you will hopefully have a better understanding of what a poem does and how to write one.
Daniel has a MA in English Literary Studies from the University of Exeter and is a habitual reader and writer, with a number of publications to his name, all of which can be found on his website danielpaulmarshall.com.
