In collaboration with T A P E and Birds’ Eye View, Exeter Phoenix are pleased to present a special screening of A Tale Of Love And Desire, along with the anthology We Wrote in Symbols: Love and Lust by Arab Women Writers edited by Selma Dabbagh.
Selma Dabbagh and contributors to the anthology will offer us an insight into the long tradition of erotic writing in Arabic Literature.
A Tale of Love and Desire written and directed by Leyla Bouzid follows Ahmed, a 18-year old French Algerian, who meets Farah, a young Tunisian girl. He discovers a collection of sensual and erotic Arab literature and falls in love with Farah as he tries to resist the desire he feels for her, clashing with the moral compass he’s set for himself and tries to impose on others.

T A P E presents a season of special screenings and events celebrating the incredible work of Isabel Sandoval, US-based Filipina filmmaker and actress, and Tunisian screenwriter-director Leyla Bouzid. We will be screening two of their recent films: Lingua Franca and A Tale of Love and Desire as part of 12 special events that will be presented in partnership with writers and poetry collectives in venues across the UK.

About Selma Dabbagh
Selma Dabbagh is a British Palestinian writer of fiction whose debut novel Out of It was a Guardian Book of the Year. Her writing has been published in Granta and Wasafiri, and translated into several languages. We Wrote in Symbols celebrates the works of 75 female writers of Arab heritage who articulate love and lust with artistry and skill.
Accessibility Statement: There is a steep slope from the street leading to the main entrance and a flight of stairs up to our front door. More level access is possible by approaching from Exeter Central Library on Castle street. Step-free access to the building is available via a ramped entrance on the side of the building. The side entrance is equipped with automatic doors.
All ground floor spaces are fully accessible with a mix of level flooring and gentle ramps. Level access to accessible toilets is available on all floors. Please ask Box Office for the radar key if needed. We have gender neutral toilets available in Studio 74 and on the first floor.
In the main auditorium and Studio 74 we have raked seating which has steps on either side. The seats have arms. SENSORY NOTES
The cafe bar plays low level recorded music during the day, with moderately bright lighting. During the evening in the cafe bar the music is louder and the lighting is lower. The cafe bar can become busy at various times which makes it louder.
Events in the auditorium vary depending on what is showing, there will be signage if there is going to be haze, flashing lights or strobe.
The building can be busy with musltiple events happening at the same time, if during your visit you feel you need a quieter space please ask the duty manager who will try to accomodate this where possible.
