Quay Words

Based at the historic Custom House on the quayside, Quay Words brings live literature to Exeter through Literature Works with workshops, book launches, writers-in-residence, and live readings.

Fittingly for the quayside, the Summer 2022 season delves into all things maritime, with a series of events based around Exeter's ebb & flow! Scroll down for event highlights.

Summer 2022 Writer in Residence - Sophie Dumont

Quay Words' latest Writer in Residence is the wonderful Sophie Dumont, a writer, voice artist, and workshop facilitator based in the South West. A University of Exeter alumni, Sophie's poetry is anchored in themes of urban waterways exploring her relationship to bodies of water and what the river can carry. She has been published in The Rialto & The Moth among others!

Previous writers-in-residence include Icelandic writer Johann Thorsson, South West poet Louisa Adjoa Parker, best-selling novelist Patrick Gale, 2020 Costa Book of the Year winner Monique Roffey, and Exeter's very own novelist & live literature expert Ellen Wiles - a tremendously talented roster!

“I’m incredibly excited and honoured to be Writer-in-Residence this summer. I hope to explore an emotional cartography of Exeter – a city I inhabited as a student and which is to blame for my love affair with poetry. I can’t wait to map-make with Exeter’s communities. I’m eager to dive into archives & local stories of maritime history and build a rich pool of material to splash about in.”
