A Walk with Sabah Choudrey: LGBTQ+ Young People

  • Institute of Arabic & Islamic Studies Building, University of Exeter Streatham Campus Stocker Road Exeter, England, EX4 4ND United Kingdom (map)

The day will begin at 10am at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS), University of Exeter, from where we will depart to walk, explore, document, breathe and share in the hills and woods beyond.

This event is open to  LGBTQ+ people between the ages of 16-25 and will be facilitated by Sabah and community members.

A vegan lunch and warm beverages will be provided to all participants.

We are honoured and delighted to announce an opportunity for young LBGTQ+ people to share time and space outdoors with author, speaker and activist Sabah Choudrey, as part of the events launching their new book: Supporting Trans People of Colour.

Please join us for a day of movement, reflection and community in the wild/er spaces of Exeter.

Further details and directions will be provided to registered attendees nearer the date, but please anticipate dressing warmly in suitable clothing/footwear.

A rough itinerary has been drafted, and is below, so do take a look to get a sense of what the structure of the time is, and whether the time spent walking works for you.

Cost: Free

Our route will take in some of the lanes and open spaces near the University of Exeter, with an emphasis on being and breathing together in nature. We will design the exact route according to the experience and preferences of participants, and we will not be walking for excessively long distances or periods of time. The terrain may be wet, muddy, uneven, grassy and/or rocky - very Devon! But we will plan according to the weather and the wishes of those on the adventure. We can opt in or out of climbing hills/steeper terrain and can journey at whatever speeds work for the group. Please include as much information about requirements/preferences as you feel comfortable on the registration form.

We are working hard to ensure a safe space and accessible experience, so please take time to complete the registration questionnaire with as much information as you can.

Ticket sales will end on Friday 28th at 12:00. This is to give the organisers time to collate the info provided and plot an appropriate route.

If you have any questions you can direct them to Katie Natanel, who has been tirelessly helping organise the walk and planning the route, and will be on hand on the day. She will also be collating the info with Sabah from the registration forms.

If you prefer, you can direct questions to transcafe@exeter.ac.uk - this is an inbox monitored ONLY by a small team of trans people, facilitators of the Trans and Nonbinary Cafe. We will answer any questions we can, or anonymise and pass on questions to Katie. We have made this option available in case anyone would feel more comfortable discussing their query with trans people (as is sometimes the case!).
