Creative Writing workshop for KS2 children (Years 3 and 4) - Spring Fever!

  • University of Exeter, St Luke's Campus 79 Heavitree Road Exeter, England, EX1 2LT United Kingdom (map)

‘The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. Something up above was calling him imperiously... so he scraped and scratched and scratched and scraped, working busily with his little paws and muttering to himself, 'Up we go! Up we go!' till at last, pop! his snout came out into the sunlight, and he found himself rolling in the warm grass of a great meadow.’

- The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame

Let’s celebrate the coming of Spring! We will read Spring poetry and prose written by some of the best children’s authors. We will look at how Spring arrives in different books and poems. We will personify her and write our own poetry about what she does and what magical powers she brings to the world. We will go outside and personify the natural world using imagery to bring our writing to life. We will personify flowers, leaves, the sky, the earth, the animals and give them all a voice. We will use drama techniques in performing extracts from literature.

We offer an exciting and comprehensive range of one-day activities for children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) across the autumn, spring and summer term. Our latest programme of events now includes a small selection of after-school clubs, enabling enrichment opportunities to continue beyond the end of the school day.

Our aim has always been to create an environment in which children can immerse themselves in collaborative and inspiring activities; to develop new and existing skills and interests; to feel motivated by practical, hands-on learning; and to meet other like-minded children, all within the context of a Higher Education setting.

We welcome Key Stage 2 children from every background, from state education to home schooling. Our workshops are especially suited to those who demonstrate a particular interest or skill in a subject. We are committed to supporting the participation of pupils in receipt of Pupil Premium funding and welcome you to get in touch with us to discuss applying for a free place.

Cost: £35

Two free places per term are available to those from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. For individuals wishing to apply for a free place please contact us at: enrichment@exeter.ac.uk.

Accessibility Statement: Please contact us at enrichment@exeter.ac.uk to discuss your accessibility needs. This workshop takes place on a ground floor classroom without any steps.
