Exeter Custom House, with its setting on the quayside by the River Exe, overlooked by the wild landscape of Dartmoor, is the perfect place to discover real and imagined natural worlds.
On this course spread over five weeks, you will embark on outer and inner journeys, finding fresh ways to write about the places and themes that haunt your imagination. Pascale will bring binoculars, magnifying glasses, animal myths, and field-guides. Using exercises and games, she will show how poems can arrive from reading other poems, looking at the natural world, art, myth or from playing with images and language. At least one session will be outdoors, where we will track poems along the River Exe. We will capture our poems as though they were creatures which have a life of their own, beyond our knowledge. Bring a passion for nature and a love of poetry. By the end of the course, you will have created a personal menagerie, written during fieldwork, workshops, and with the aid of inspiring wildlife poems.
The course will on Saturdays between 11am and 1pm as follows: 7 May, 14 May, 21 May, 28 May, 4 June.
Cost: £100 full price / £50 concessions.
Exeter Custom House are offering one bursary place for this course, which is available by application only (to customhouse@literatureworks.org.uk) and will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. The bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need not writing ability.
