Trans Cafe Welcomes Sabah Choudrey, on Being Co-Conspirators in Liberation

  • Seminar Room 4, The Forum University of Exeter EX4 4PY (map)

The University of Exeter Trans and Nonbinary Cafe, with support from the Alumni Annual Fund, are delighted to welcome back Sabah Choudrey.

The event is due to be held in a hybrid room (Forum Seminar Room 4), so will be available to be attended in person or online. Please take care to book the ticket type you want, as in-person attendees will be limited.

From allyship and community to ourselves and self-care, this workshop starts with intersectionality, exploring who allyship is for and what it means when we also exist on the margins. Even when we know we must, how can we be equipped to stand alongside others, when we have so many messages against us already? Then we will reflect on ourselves and our personal internalised -isms and the external-isms we learn from the world around us. We will create a space to explore how this shows up in our lives, and how to challenge it.

We’ll explore themes such as: Do trans people need to unlearn transphobia? How does (internalised) transmisogyny show up in our lives? What’s that voice and how do we talk back to it?

The talk is open to all. Though it focuses at points on trans people's experiences, it will hopefully offer food for thought for everyone, particularly those who are marginalised themselves, whether by transness and/or any other marginalisation. Though cis people are very welcome to attend this event, we would remind all attendees to be respectful of one another and be considerate of one another's experiences and identities.

Event Guidance and Accessibility

Discriminatory behaviour of any kind will result in perpetrators being removed from the event, and follow up disciplinary action may be taken. If you are removed from the event, you will be unable to re-enter it.

Attendees are welcome if desired to change their display name on Zoom to reflect the name they would like to be used and to include their pronouns. There is no pressure to do so, and attendees are reminded to not assume gender or pronouns of others. There are some restrictions on University of Exeter Zoom accounts that may limit this option. Unfortunately, this is not a setting we can adjust. The event will be open to non-Exeter affiliated Zoom accounts, so using a personal account may be possible if this is a barrier.

If there are any specific access requirements you have in order to make the event accessible to you, please email transcafe@exeter.ac.uk as soon as possible and we will do our best to support these.

Any other questions or concerns, please email transcafe@exeter.ac.uk. Though it is a shared mailbox, it is only accessed by a team of two trans people, and emails can be handled confidentially.

Registered Attendees will be sent the Zoom information and links nearer to the event, through Eventbrite's automated system. If you have any trouble with this, or have registered but have not received the meeting info by the evening before the event, please email transcafe@exeter.ac.uk.

Should Covid restrictions change, and in-person attendees no longer be viable, all attendees will still be able to attend the event online, and the link (as well as an email outlining that the in-person attendance is no longer an option) will be sent to all ticketholders. Should this happen, we will let you know as soon as possible.
