Roxane Gay - With One ‘N’ Tour
On Tuesday 14th March 2023, Exeter UNESCO City of Literature and the University of Exeter hosted internationally acclaimed author Roxane Gay, as part of her first live UK tour.
“We have a lot to talk about…”
Equity specialist Sharifa Hashem hosted a evening of conversation with Roxane in front of a sold-out crowd in the Forum Alumni Auditorium. It was a reflective, witty exploration of feminism and social criticism, with topics ranging from politics, patriarchy, Lizzo, Scrabble, and reality television all in one sitting. Questions from the audience were asked in a wide-ranging, open-hearted Q&A.
Roxane signed books for an inspired audience afterwards, and we were thrilled to have Exeter’s only independent bookshop Bookbag join us as official bookseller.

Future Voices - Sponsored by University of Exeter’s Student Guild
Roxane met with students from Exeter College, the University of Exeter’s Guild Societies, and MAs in Publishing and Creative Writing for a Q&A session. Covering critical and creative writing - particularly writing trauma - the world of publishing, sexism and feminism, and much more, it was a very special hour with one of the world’s leading feminist voices.
Anna Cohn Orchard, Executive Director of Exeter City of Literature, said:
“I’ve been lucky enough to see Dr. Roxane Gay speak at two events in the US and each time I have been blown away by the way she weaves together cultural and social commentary with heart, humour, and deep thought. She is one of the great writers and thinkers of our generation and I’m incredibly honoured to have brought her to Exeter, a UNESCO City of Literature.”
