Theatre Alibi
Theatre Alibi have been making work for adult and family audiences from its base at Emmanuel Hall in Exeter since 1982; if you went to school in Exeter any time after that, chances are you can remember being thrilled by a Theatre Alibi production (I certainly can! —Liv).
Theatre Alibi are contemporary storytellers, creating work for all ages that moves freely between the intimate and the epic and aspires to be inventive, joyful, moving, vivid, intricate and ambitious. Their productions are marked by a passion for the live event – actors as storytellers absolutely present with their audience, live music, a delight in revealing acts of transformation that would often be confined to the wings and a level of inventiveness that allows us to embrace action that might seem to be unstageable. The company integrates a wide variety of art forms into its work and recent productions have featured animation, film, puppetry, photography and music both live and recorded.
Not only do Theatre Alibi take their productions around the county and country, but they are also an integral part of the local scene, who truly understand the value of storytelling in the community. Since 2019 they have been working with the St Thomas community to gather local stories, creating a whole range of events and activities celebrating these deeply rooted tales, culminating in a wonderfully immersive full-scale production: River Land.
Over 10 days Emmanuel Hall saw over 700 visitors to the gorgeous pop-up theatre — which was also Theatre Alibi’s most environmentally sustainable production ever!
Their St Thomas home — Emmanuel Hall — has a range of spaces available to hire; workshops, meeting rooms, even the whole theatre!
